According to the sixth National Family Health Survey (NFHS-6) study released on Friday, the proportion of women who have used the internet at least once has almost doubled from 33.3% in 2019–2021 to 64.3% in 2023–2024.
According to the 2019–2021 NFHS-5, 33.3% of Indian women reported using the internet at least once. Over the course of the last two years, this number has doubled, indicating a paradigm shift in women's internet accessibility.
According to data, the percentage of women with banking or savings accounts went from 78.6% in 2019–2021 (NFHS–5) to 89% in 2023–2024 (NFHS–6), while the percentage of women with personal mobile phones increased from 53.9% in 2019–2021 to 63.6% in 2023–2024.According to the Union health ministry, the NFHS-6 documents ongoing progress in women's financial empowerment and digital inclusion.
With the help of programs like the Menstrual Hygiene Scheme (MHS) within the Rashtriya Kishor Swasthya Karyakram and reasonably priced sanitary products under the Janaushadhi scheme, the percentage of women in the 15–24 age group who use hygienic methods of menstrual protection increased from 77.6% in 2019–2021 to 79.2% in 2023–24.
According to the ministry, these programs have improved menstrual hygiene awareness, accessibility, and adoption. The results show consistent improvements in nutrition, women's empowerment, maternity and child health, and access to critical services," it stated.
However, the ministry noted that new issues like growing non-communicable diseases, lifestyle-related risks, and the dual burden of undernutrition and rising adult obesity underscore the need for ongoing attention to preventive healthcare, behavioural change, and balanced nutrition strategies.
It further stated that overall, the results confirm India's consistent advancement in reaching the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).It said, "India is well-positioned to maintain these gains and further improve the health and well-being of its population with continued emphasis on convergence, last-mile delivery, and inclusive growth."
The International Institute for Population Sciences, Mumbai, served as the nodal agency for the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare's 2023–2024 NFHS-6.
The survey, which covers around 6.79 lakh households in 715 districts, promotes evidence-based planning and program implementation up to the district level and offers crucial data on population, health, nutrition, and family welfare indicators.
