Following severe rains that killed 17 people, caused dozens of rivers to overflow, and caused a reservoir dam to fail, rescuers searched flooded areas of China for survivors. Officials warned that rain will continue on Wednesday.
Typhoon Maysak caused severe floods and torrential rain in the southern region of Guangxi, resulting in the deaths of six people and the evacuation of at least 130,000 others. Regional officials warned that rain will continue there and in neighboring Guangdong province on Wednesday.
Nearly 13,000 acres of agricultural land in Guangxi were damaged when swiftly moving muddy water burst the banks of 40 rivers and streams, according to official media.Videos released by the state broadcaster CCTV showed life-vest-wearing rescue personnel on inflatable boats as torrents of water rushed over the crumbling concrete walls of a reservoir dam that had ruptured in Guangxi.
Additional disaster aid, including food, raincoats, and rubber boats, was being sent to the area by Chinese officials, according to a Wednesday report from state news agency Xinhua.
A harsh test
According to the State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters, authorities in Guangxi maintained the second-highest level for flood-control emergency reaction.
At the Wuzhou Hydrological Station in Guangxi, flood peaks "exceeding the warning water level" by more than six meters (20 feet) are anticipated early on Thursday, according to Minister of Water Resources Li Guoying.In the central province of Hubei, thunderstorms and strong winds caused an additional 11 fatalities and 331 injuries. Tornadoes were also recorded late on Monday, according to Xinhua.
According to Xinhua, 4,800 dwellings were destroyed and 22 more have collapsed in Hubei, while one person is still missing.In China, natural disasters are frequent, especially during the summer when some areas receive heavy rains while others are scorched.According to CCTV, Xi stated on Tuesday that rescuers should "go all out" while planning emergency operations.
A landslide
Separately, a landslide in the Gansu province of northwest China claimed 21 lives, according to official media on Wednesday, one day after it buried 33.
According to Xinhua, rescue personnel raced to the location of the landslide, which happened at Rencang village in Dangchang County at around 6:56 am on Tuesday (2256 GMT Monday).Xinhua said on Wednesday, quoting local authorities, "Search and rescue efforts at the Dangchang County landslide site have concluded; the landslide resulted in 21 fatalities."
Local media said that the reason of the landslide was still being investigated.In the wake of the landslide, authorities have allocated 30 million yuan ($4.4 million) for restoration.
