Indian shuttler Ayush Shetty caused another upset at the Badminton Asia Championships, storming into the semi-finals after defeating Indonesia's world No. 4 Jonatan Christie on Friday at the Ningbo Olympic Sports Centre. Ayush defeated Olympian and third seed Christie 23-21, 21-17 to become the first Indian men's singles badminton player since HS Prannoy in 2018 to win a medal in the continental championship. Ayush won his first match against Christie. It will also be India's first medal at the Badminton Asia Championships since Chirag Shetty and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy won gold in the men's doubles in 2023.
In the semi-finals, Ayush will face the winner of the match between Paris 2024 silver medallist Kunlavut Vitidsarn of Thailand and Weng Hongyang.
The first game was hotly contested, with neither player managing to break Christie's slim 11-10 lead at the break. Following the restart, the Indonesian gained command of the game, increasing his lead to 18-15 and even gaining a game point before Ayush rallied and sent the match into a tiebreaker.
The second game was as hard-fought, with the Indian leading by a slim 11-9 at halftime before tightening his grip and shutting it out to advance to the semi-finals.Earlier in the tournament, Ayush stunned world No. 7 and reigning Asian Games champion Li Shi Feng before beating Chi Yu Jen of Chinese Taipei to qualify for the quarter-finals. PV Sindhu, a two-time Olympic medallist, lost in the second round, while Lakshya Sen was eliminated in the first round.
