Dhruv Kapila and Tanisha Crasto, India's best mixed doubles team, started their campaign with a win on Day 1 of the Badminton Asia Championships at the Ningbo Olympic Sports Center in Ningbo, China. The Indian combination won the opening game 21-14 against Thailand's Phuwanat Horbanluekit and Benyapa Aimsaard. The Thai duo answered with a commanding 21-11 victory in the second, forcing a decider. Dhruv and Tanisha regained their early momentum and won the match 21-15 in the final game.
The Indians now face a difficult Round of 16 match against Malaysia's Cheng Tang Jie and Toh Ee Wei, who presently have a 2-0 lead.
In other mixed doubles events, Malaysians Wong Tien Ci and Lim Chiew Sien defeated Ashith Surya and Amrutha Pramuthesh 21-16, 21-15, while Rohan Kapoor and Gadde Ruthvika Shivani were defeated 21-13, 21-19 by eighth seeds Goh Soon Huat and Lai Shevon Jemie.
PV Sindhu and Lakshya Sen, two of India's top singles players, will compete on Wednesday. Sindhu, a two-time Olympic medallist, will face Malaysia's Wong Ling Ching in a Round of 32 match in the women's singles main event.
In the men's singles, Thomas Cup winner H.S Prannoy will face World No. 62 Nguyen Hai Dang of Vietnam, while teenager Ayush Shetty will play fifth seed Li Shi Feng of China, the 2023 All-England champion, in the first round.
Former World Championship silver medallist Kidambi Srikanth will begin his campaign against Singapore's Loh Kean Yew, while Paris Olympic Games semifinalist Lakshya Sen will face Lee Cheuk Yiu of Hong Kong-China in a Round of 32 encounter.
