Cash Row: Justice Yashwant Varma Resigns From Allahabad High Court

Justice Yashwant Varma of the Allahabad High Court, who is facing impeachment proceedings, has offered his resignation to the President. He was previously transferred from the Delhi High Court to Allahabad following a dispute over alleged cash discovery at his home. He took the oath at Allahabad on April 5, 2025.
What did the letter say?
While I do not intend to burden your august office with the reasons that have compelled me to submit this missive, it is with deep regret that I hereby tender my resignation from the position of Judge of the Hon'ble High Court of Judicature at Allahabad, effective immediately. It has been a privilege to serve in this role.

His resignation comes at a time when he is the subject of an ongoing internal investigation, and legislative removal proceedings are also being considered in light of the claims.
The parliamentary panel, which was formed to investigate the matter in the context of potential impeachment proceedings, has been evaluating documents, responses, and other evidence on file, and is anticipated to deliberate on its findings following the hearing.
Earlier this year, Varma responded to the parliamentary committee investigating the case, unequivocally rejecting any role in the occurrence.
According to ANI, he informed the panel that he was not present when the fire broke out and that no cash was discovered from the premises.Justice Varma reiterated his position, claiming that he had "absolutely no role" in the purported incident. He further stated that he was not the initial responder and said that others who arrived first did not adequately secure the situation.
