Cricket Without Pat Cummins: Why isnt the World Cup-winning captain participating in Australias ODI lineup against India?

A three-match ODI series between Australia and India will begin in Perth on October 19 and be followed by five Twenty20 matches. The 15-man ODI squad does not include World Cup-winning skipper Pat Cummins.

The ODI team will still be captained by Mitchell Marsh. Pat Cummins' back problem is still being treated. Although it was not a fracture, scans earlier showed lumbar bone stress.

Cricket Australia announced in September that the 32-year-old all-rounder would not play in the forthcoming series against New Zealand and India. Beginning on November 21, 2025, medical personnel are exercising caution to make sure Cummins is healthy enough to play in the home Ashes.

Cummins won't be considered for the upcoming limited-overs series against India or New Zealand and will continue his rehabilitation plan, with a return to bowling to be determined as part of his Ashes preparation," Cricket Australia said in its September statement.

On November 8, 2024, Pat Cummins last participated in an ODI. With 141 balls left, Pakistan triumphed by 9 wickets after sweeping out Australia for 163 in Adelaide.

In the game, Cummins became Australia's most economical bowler, scoring 13 off 17 balls while giving up 35 runs in 7 overs.

After Aaron Finch retired, TPat Cummins took over as Australia's ODI captain in October 2022. When Cummins was hurt or needed a break, Mitchell Marsh frequently took over as captain. Marsh was previously given consideration for the full-time position but turned it down. He is now in charge of Australia's T20I team.

Mitchell Starc, meanwhile, returns to international cricket after taking a break during the South Africa tour. In August, the Proteas defeated Australia 2-1 in the three-match ODI series.

It's possible that Matt Renshaw may eventually make his debut for his country. He is a member of the Australian team. Three years have passed since the 29-year-old southpaw's last Test match in New Delhi. After scoring a lot for Australia's "A" against Sri Lanka's "A" in July, he earned a spot in the ODI squad.

Mitchell Owen, who is also aiming for his first ODI appearance for Australia, has joined Renshaw. Marcus Stoinis, Glenn Maxwell, and Steve Smith are among the senior players who have retired from ODI cricket. Ahead of the 2027 World Cup, Renshaw and Owen might be important players.
