Elon Musk's satellite communication company, Starlink, is apparently the subject of a significant inquiry in the United States due to claims that fraud centres based in Myanmar are using the satellites. Rapid development apparently began at complexes near the Thailand–Myanmar border within weeks after a crackdown on these fraud hubs months ago.
The news agency AFP claims that Elon Musk's Starlink satellite internet service is currently being used extensively by the centres, and as part of an exclusive investigation, the news agency provided images showing flocks of these dishes. Following Thailand's shutdown of electricity and internet connectivity, this occurred.
Probe into Elon Musk's Starlink
Several California prosecutors allegedly alerted Musk's Starlink in July 2024 that the scammers were using its satellites. AFP claimed that the US Congress Joint Economic Committee has now begun an investigation into Starlink's purported role in the operations of the fraud centres.
Elon Musk had already heard complaints from a number of Thai and American politicians over the operation of the fraud centres. Senator Maggie Hassan had previously mentioned the use of the satellite service to run "scam compounds" in Southeast Asia in July of this year.
In a letter to Musk, Hassan stated, "Scam networks in Myanmar, Thailand, Cambodia, and Laos, however, have apparently continued to use Starlink despite service rules permitting SpaceX to terminate access for fraudulent activity," according to CNN.
However, neither SpaceX nor Starlink provided an official answer on that matter.
