After a violent incident targeting Chief Justice of India (CJI) Justice B.R. Gavai at the Supreme Court grounds on Monday, October 6, 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi called the court to express his disapproval of the attack and gratitude for CJI Gavai's composure.
Mr. Modi claimed that the attack on CJI Gavai had "endangered every Indian" in a post on the microblogging platform X.
spoke with Justice B.R. Gavai ji, the Chief Justice of India. Every Indian is incensed by the assault on him that occurred earlier today on the grounds of the Supreme Court. Such disgusting behaviour has no place in our society. It is completely unacceptable. I was impressed by Justice Gavai's composure in the face of this circumstance. It demonstrates his dedication to upholding the principles of justice and bolstering the spirit of our Constitution," he wrote.

The Prime Minister's call and post follow an incident in which a lawyer flung what seemed to be a sheaf of papers at Justice Gavai during a Supreme Court hearing. Justice Gavai asked the attorneys presenting their case to continue their work after acknowledging his initial shock at the incident. "Avoid focussing on such things. Please continue... Why are you upset if we're not? The CJI instructed the courtroom's preoccupied solicitors to "just ignore."
Advocate Rakesh Kishore, the perpetrator of the attack, yelled obscenities about "Sanatan" as he was led by security guards from the courtroom. There was controversy around the CJI's recent comments regarding a Vishnu idol in Khajuraho. Following nearly two days of nonstop social media criticism, Chief Justice Gavai publicly stated his belief in "true secularism" and all religions.

The attack on CJI Gavai was widely denounced, with statements condemning it coming from Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and opposition leaders like Sonia Gandhi.
