According to ship tracking data from LSEG, two extremely big crude tankers carrying Iranian oil have arrived at Indian ports. Local refiners are using a temporary waiver that the US granted last month to start buying from Tehran again for the first time in seven years.
On April 19, the current waiver is scheduled to expire.
According to the data, the Curacao-flagged Jaya is at the eastern port of Odisha, while the Iran-flagged Felicity has arrived at Sikka Port in western India.
Two million barrels of oil are transported by a VLCC.
Due to pressure from the United States not to purchase Iranian petroleum, India, the third-largest oil importer and consumer in the world, has not received a shipment from Iran since May 2019.
Additionally, India has permitted Reliance Industries Ltd., the operator of the largest refining complex in the world, to purchase Iranian oil loaded on the Iran-flagged VLCCs Felicity and Hedy, the Comoros-flagged aframax Kaviz, and the Curacao-flagged VLCC Lenore. All of these vessels are over 20 years old and subject to U.S. sanctions.
