"Let Us Empower Nari Shakti": PM Modi Calls for Support on Womens Reservation Bill

Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated on Thursday that the proposed revisions to the Women Reservation Act are more than just a legislative exercise; they reflect the aspirations of crores of women across India, and he invited all MPs to join forces to support this initiative.
In a signed statement published on his website narendramodi.in, the prime minister also stated that the action is an endorsement of a value that has always driven India's civilisational ethos: society improves when women advance.
He stated that women's reservation must be implemented in the next 2029 Lok Sabha elections and Assembly elections in several states. The prime minister stated that the country is on the verge of a historic moment, an opportunity to strengthen the pillars of democracy and reaffirm the common commitment to equality and inclusion.
On April 16, Parliament will examine and pass a Bill to advance women's reservations. To describe this solely as a legislative exercise would be an understatement. It reflects the aspirations of crores of women in India," he remarked.

The Budget Session of Parliament has been extended, and a special three-day sitting of the House has been scheduled for April 16 to 18, during which the 'Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam', often known as the Women Reservation Act, would be revised for implementation beginning with the 2029 general elections.
It will raise the number of Lok Sabha seats to 816, including 273 reserved for women.
The provision for 33% reservation for women in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies was introduced by changing the Constitution in 2023, but it will take effect once the delimitation exercise based on the 2027 Census is completed. As a result, if the current law remains unchanged, it will not go into effect until 2034.
According to the broad contours available, the number of Lok Sabha seats will be increased from 543 to 816, with 273 seats reserved for women. The reservation will also be done on a "vertical basis," with seats reserved for SCs and STs.
The constituencies will be redrawn based on the 2011 Census, rather than the anticipated 2027 Census.
A similar exercise will be carried out for state assemblies, with seats reserved on a pro rata basis.According to the story, PM Modi stated that women make up about half of India's population and have made significant contributions to the country. Today, women are making tremendous successes in various fields.Women are at the forefront of India's success in science and technology, entrepreneurship, sports, the armed forces, music, and the arts, he stated.
The prime minister stated that over the years, consistent efforts have been made to establish an environment conducive to women's empowerment.
He stated that increasing access to education, healthcare, financial inclusion, and basic utilities have reinforced the basis for women's economic and social participation."Yet, their representation in the world of politics and legislative bodies has not always been commensurate with their role in society," he stated.
PM Modi stated that this is especially bad because women who participate in administration and decision-making contribute experiences and perspectives that enrich public debate and increase government quality.
He stated that past governments have made several attempts throughout the years to ensure women's equal participation in democratic institutions. Committees were formed, bill drafts were introduced, but they never saw the light of day."But the broad consensus has remained that women's representation in legislative bodies has to increase," he stated.
The prime minister stated that in September 2023, Parliament passed the 'Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam' with consensus.I consider it one of the most memorable events in my life. This chance to safeguard women's reservation also aligns with the spirit of our Constitution. "The drafters of our Constitution envisioned a society in which equality is both enshrined and practiced," he stated.
PM Modi emphasised the importance of increasing women's representation in legislative institutions to achieve his agenda. It demonstrates our commitment to creating a society in which every individual has an equal say in moulding the country's future."This is a moment that cannot be deferred any longer. Every delay in advancing women's representation is, in effect, a delay in strengthening the quality and inclusiveness of our democracy," he stated.
The prime minister urged all Members of Parliament to support this historic step for India's women, regardless of party affiliation.Let us embrace this opportunity with a sense of responsibility and purpose. "Let us act in accordance with the highest traditions of our democracy," he urged.
PM Modi stated that India has always demonstrated that when it comes to matters of national importance, it can overcome divides and act as one."This is one such moment. Let us move forward together and strengthen Constitutional values and empower our Nari Shakti for national progress," he declared.
