"He lived as complete a life as any human can. Joy, plenty of spirit, irrepressible laughter—a titan of a ginger-haired man."
She also acknowledged individuals that helped them through his sickness and shared a quote that Patrick enjoyed.
She said, "We are so grateful for every person who supported us through the last few years," she said. "Mick liked this saying from Brendan Behan, and it feels perfect now: 'The most essential things in the world are to get something to eat, something to drink, and somebody to love you.' Friends of Patrick established a GoFundMe campaign in November 2025 to help cover the cost of his care after he underwent a tracheostomy, which was essential to help him breathe as the condition worsened.
The fundraising highlighted the severity of his medical demands and hoped to raise approximately GBP 100,000. It eventually raised more than GBP 110,487, indicating tremendous support from wellwishers.
Background
Patrick sent a health update on social media earlier this year, which ended up being his final message. He discussed his diagnosis, treatment options, and the problems he experienced. He also addressed the issues with care and resources.
He stated, "I received confirmation that it would be 6-12 months before I could return home due to a lack of staffing resources." Thank you to everyone who helped push this through, from senior social workers to legislators to the hospital's CEO. Everyone has tried so hard, but there simply isn't enough staff."
Despite being told by his neurologist that he only had a short amount of time, Patrick showed hope and a desire to live a meaningful life.
