Odisha MBBS student gang rape: Durgapur residents are furious, and WB CM Mamata Banerjee is under harsh criticism.

As protests against the West Bengal government and its Chief Minister, Mamata Banerjee, escalate in the wake of the alleged gangrape of an Odia medical student last Friday, widespread ire has swept across Durgapur.

Public indignation reportedly increased following Banerjee's contentious claim that the girl shouldn't have gone out at night.

Several authorities have denounced the Saturday remarks as being extremely insensitive and victim-blaming. Odisha Deputy Chief Minister Pravati Parida called the comments "shameful," especially considering they were made by a female leader.
According to sources, demonstrators rushed to the streets on Monday night to call for the government to be held accountable and for the survivor to receive prompt justice. Mamata's remarks were deemed unacceptable by a number of student organisations, locals, and women's rights advocates, who urged her to issue an apology and make sure that justice is served promptly.

Political responses from Odisha have also flooded in as the indignation builds. Even her father has been denied the opportunity to meet her, according to the BJP, which has accused the West Bengal government of stifling information regarding the survivor's condition.

Five Arrested; Prime Accused Identified

The Durgapur Police have so far arrested five accused in connection with the case. The latest arrest, made on Monday, is of Sheikh Saifin Ul, while four others, including the prime suspect, Nasiruddin, were held earlier.
