In Episode 134 of Mann Ki Baat, Prime Minister Narendra Modi lauded Gurindervir Singh and Animesh Kujur, India's new sprint legends, for their historic, record-breaking efforts in the Federation Cup in Ranchi. The Prime Minister emphasised their special athletic dynamic during the phone call, praising the fact that the two continue to be good friends and housemates off the track despite their intense rivalry.
The exchange came after an extraordinary 48 hours in Ranchi during which the two sportsmen shattered the national 100-meter record three times. After clocking a scorching 10.09 seconds, Gurindervir became the first Indian in history to breach the 10.10-second barrier, solidifying his position as India's fastest man.
THE BATTLE THAT SET A RECORD
The fierce back-and-forth started at the Birsa Munda Stadium during the semifinals. With the previous national record of 10.11 seconds, Animesh was the favourite going into the tournament. But in the first semi-final heat, Gurindervir smashed the record with a time of 10.07 seconds, momentarily taking the lead.
Shortly after, Animesh recovered it in the second semi-final with an incredible time of 10.05 seconds. PM Modi likened the quick conversation to a musical duet in which one performer issues a challenge and the other instantly rises to meet it. When Gurindervir stormed to 10.09 seconds in the final, he had the last say.
RIVALS BUT FRIENDS
Both athletes disclosed that their rivalry is based on mutual support, even though they are directly vying for the nation's sprinting title. Gurindervir revealed that he was actively assisting Animesh by giving him advice on starting blocks and placement even during the warm-up prior to the record-breaking race.
Gurindervir clarified, though, that once the race starts, their friendship is put on hold.We become competitors as soon as we set foot on the track," he informed the Prime Minister. "I feel like I'll run faster than him after that. However, we are pals off the track.
