A government school hostel in the Khunta neighborhood of the Mayurbhanj district of Odisha gave rise to grave claims of ragging. According to reports, a number of junior students experienced humiliation and physical punishment at the hands of their seniors.
The incident, which was partially caught on camera, sparked serious worries about the state-run facility's lack of administrative oversight and student safety.
Specifics of the Penal Action
Three Class 7 kids were allegedly made to kneel for a considerable amount of time in front of other hostel boarders by a Class 9 student. The junior pupils were allegedly singled out for playing behind the hostel building during playtime, which is when the incident allegedly started. The three students are seen kneeling while senior students question them in a video footage of the incident that has since gone viral.
The victims' and their parents' later testimonies, however, imply that the incident's scope was more than first reported.
Although only three teenagers are shown in the film, it is claimed that eight or nine students were part.
According to reports, the seniors gave the seventh-grade pupils an ultimatum: those who consented to be physically assaulted would not have to kneel for an extended period of time. In order to evade the kneeling punishment, the Class 9 pupil allegedly attacked nearly seven other classmates.Concerns About Chronic Negligence Are Voiced by Guardians
After parents saw the video and went to the school to address the administration, the incident became public knowledge. "I had seen a video clip showing our children kneeling down while some other students were questioning them," a guardian remarked. Our child informed us that they had been made to kneel by the ninth graders. Although we are unsure of the precise reason for their actions, we were informed that our children were being punished for playing there. As soon as we saw the video clip, we went to the school.
Sadly, parents said that this is not a unique incident, stating that similar ragging incidents had happened at the dormitory in the past.
They also complained about the lack of senior employees. According to reports, the school had no regular headmaster at the time of the incident and was run by officials in a "in-charge" role.
Concerns Regarding Administrative Responsibility
It is unknown where the hostel warden, the head master in charge, and the school superintendent were at the time of the incident. Guardians have claimed that lower-level staff members are in charge of running the hostel on a daily basis because higher officials are routinely missing from their positions.Despite the seriousness of the charges and the video's supporting evidence, the school administration was unable to give an official statement.
Additionally, at the time of reporting, neither the staff members in charge of monitoring nor any information about disciplinary proceedings against the involved students were available.
