While tributes poured in from all sides of the political spectrum, responses to the death of veteran Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Mukul Roy were dominated by political charges and counter-allegations.
The senior TMC leader's remains was taken to the state assembly in the afternoon after he passed away at a private hospital in Kolkata at around 1:30 am on Monday.
Bengal minister Firhad Hakim (Bobby) told reporters on the sidelines that Roy's death was caused by the BJP and that it caused him a great deal of mental hardship. My older brother, Dada, passed away today. I can state, however, that his premature death is entirely the fault of the BJP.
The BJP was responsible for his murder. They put a lot of pressure on Roy and threatened to have him join the BJP. "Central agencies put pressure on him," Hakim claimed.
Roy, known as the "Chanakya" of Bengali politics, had been afflicted with a protracted illness for a considerable amount of time. According to his relatives, he had spent about 600 days in his final stages of hospitalization.
Since returning to the Trinamool Congress, Roy had mostly avoided contact with Bengali politics. Alongside Mamata Banerjee, he was one of the party's founding members, and it is said that the TMC's recognizable "Ghas Phool" logo was registered in his name at the party's establishment."Roy was our party's second-in-command," Hakim added. Mukul Roy was the answer for us from the beginning of our political history. He was warned that he would either go to jail or join the BJP. Although we all have strong emotional attachments to our party, the BJP is making a concerted effort to get us to join the saffron camp. Mukul Roy was broken as a result of this intense emotional battle.
Dilip Ghosh, a leader of the BJP, retaliated by making accusations against the TMC.
"Mukul Roy, running on a BJP ticket, won the most recent election. He was appointed Rashtriya Upadhyaksh of the BJP. He was forced to rejoin the TMC due to pressure from them. He had no relationship with us for the next four years after that. He was taken back and executed by the TMC.
Ghosh questioned, "How can the BJP be held accountable for his passing today?"Mukul Roy undoubtedly influenced the Trinamool Congress Party. In the BJP, Mukul da been with us for a long time. When he returned to the TMC after 2021, we were all taken aback. After that, we didn't communicate with him. His condition was deteriorating up until that point. I don't see how the BJP may be involved in his murder. BJP leader Shatarupa Ghosh went on to say that TMC top ministers shouldn't politicize Mukul Roy's passing.
"There is a chronology that the BJP has a washing machine," said Subhankar Sarkar, the state president of the Congress. What Firhad Hakim has said is unknown to us. It is an old trend of the BJP.
Early in the morning, word of his passing spread, and social media users of all political persuasions expressed their condolences.
"Sadened by the demise of former Union Minister Shri Mukul Roy Ji," Prime Minister Narendra Modi wrote on X. His social service work and political background will live on. I send my sympathies to his loved ones and supporters. Om Shanti.
"I am saddened and shocked by the news of the sudden demise of veteran politician Mukul Roy," stated Mamata Banerjee, the chief minister of West Bengal. He had been my political coworker for a long time and had fought alongside me in numerous political battles. I am devastated to learn of his passing.
Since the beginning, Mukul Roy has given his life in support of the Trinamool Congress. He was welcomed at all party levels and rose to the position of Union Minister. He later took a different route and returned. It is important to remember his organizational abilities and contribution to Bengali politics. Regardless of party allegiance, his departure would be felt in the political circles," she continued.
In addition to accompanying Roy's son and family to the final ceremonies in Halishahar, TMC National General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee paid his final respects to the party veteran at the assembly.
