Social media is ablaze with claimed high-definition footage from actor-turned-politician Vijay's much-anticipated "farewell" flick Jana Nayagan, as the controversy escalates with the producers' legal team issuing a stern public notice.
The film's legal counsel issued a formal statement on April 9 warning that downloading, storing, or sharing any snippets from the unreleased film is a serious infraction and a violation of copyright laws. The notification expressly warns the public against sharing such content on sites such as WhatsApp, X, YouTube, and Instagram.
The legal team also indicated that criminal proceedings have been begun against those responsible for leaking and spreading the clips, and that anyone discovered engaging with such content may face legal penalties under applicable laws.
The letter underlines that even passive actions such as sending or saving the video may result in prosecution, highlighting that the content remains the filmmakers' intellectual property and is protected by copyright laws.
The film, widely regarded as Vijay's final movie before entering full-fledged politics with his party Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), was originally scheduled for release on January 9. However, certification has been delayed despite acknowledged adherence to suggested savings.
According to reports, the CBFC expressed reservations about scenes displaying severe violence and certain army-related themes, requesting more expert evaluation. Following a legal battle, the filmmakers sent the film to a revision committee. The delay has subsequently escalated into a political storm. Vijay recently claimed that the Centre, governed by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), was behind the roadblocks, implying political meddling.
Today, TVK General Secretary (Elections) Aadhav Arjuna said that the leak of Jana Nayagan tapes was the work of rival parties, accusing both the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and the BJP.
The BJP has responded fiercely, calling the claims "silly." Narayanan Thirupathy, the party's spokeswoman, stated, "This is stupid. How does he say this? The film is theirs, and clips cannot be released without their knowledge. They intentionally leaked the clips in order to generate political traction."
However, the DMK declined to reply, claiming that Aadhav Arjuna's words "deserve no response."
Amid the increasing feud, TVK is running alone in the forthcoming elections, contesting all seats. Vijay is set to run in Chennai's Perambur and Tiruchirappalli East constituencies.
Meanwhile, as Vijay campaigns in Karaikudi, all eyes are on whether he would explicitly address the leak problem, which has now reached the nexus of cinema, law, and politics.
