Villagers in Bolangir claim "ghost pond" abnormalities under MGNREGA

Money intended for pond excavation and development projects under a government initiative was allegedly embezzled from Muribahal block in Odisha's Bolangir district, according to allegations of widespread financial embezzlement.
Villagers have claimed that lakhs of rupees were taken out in the name of development projects that were either never carried out on the ground or repeatedly documented in official records.
The Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) initiative has been renamed as "G RAM G" due to criticism. Locals assert that problems and financial mismanagement under the initiative persist, despite reports that the scheme's name has been changed.

Several Alleged Withdrawals
Villagers claim that over 10 renovations have been made to the Gocharamunda pond in Asurmunda village under Ghanrei panchayat over the previous five years, according to official records. Funds totaling lakhs of rupees were purportedly taken out based on these data.
The veracity of the documents is seriously questioned by the villagers' allegations that invoices for lakhs were generated in the names of two ponds, Mahulamunda and Gocharamunda Mahabandh, which they claim do not exist in the hamlet.Chudamani Tandi, the complainant, said that money was routinely taken out by proving that the Gocharamunda pond had undergone numerous renovations.
Submitted Complaints
The Digital Signature Certificate (DSC) of the Sarpanch and the Panchayat Executive Officer (PEO) is required in order to withdraw monies under the plan. The villagers claimed that these DSCs were utilized to make the money withdrawal easier. The Block Development Officer (BDO) and the District Collector have received written complaints from residents requesting an investigation into the purported anomalies. Villagers, however, assert that nothing has been done thus far.
