The Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) altered its previous stance of limiting Vinesh Phogat's participation to the 50kg class, allowing her to compete in the women's 53kg category at the Asian Games selection trials on Saturday.
Vinesh was told that she would only be allowed to compete in the 50kg category during the official weigh-in on Saturday morning, citing her participation in that weight class in her previous four international tournaments, including the Olympics in Paris. This was a dramatic turn of events.
The wrestler vehemently disagreed with the ruling, accusing the federation of discriminating against her by preventing her from participating in a category of her choosing.
WFI President Sanjay Singh told PTI, "We allowed her after she threw accusations and asked the officials to take her weight."No one should be subjected to discrimination. She didn't specify which category she wanted to compete in, but she is still allowed to do so.After weighing 53.9 kg, Vinesh was accepted for the 53 kg draw.
It now sets up a fascinating contest between her, the rapidly rising Meenakshi Goyat, and another accomplished performer, Antim Panghal.
While getting ready, Vinesh revealed in a quick interview with the media, "I am here for at least two years."
The WFI, which had insisted that Vinesh would only be taken into consideration for the 50kg division, made a major concession with this development. The federation contended that the wrestler had not properly informed the WFI about changing divisions for the trials and had regularly participated in that division in recent international contests.
After the Delhi High Court ordered the WFI to treat Vinesh as a "iconic player" and permit her to take part in the Asian Games selection trials, the matter had already caused a great deal of controversy.Vinesh, on the other hand, was eager to compete in the trials because she has competed in a number of weight divisions throughout her career, including 53kg.
The right to represent India at the Asian Games later this year would go to the trial winner. After hours of doubt, the WFI decided to allow Vinesh to compete in the 53kg draw, ensuring that one of India's most decorated female wrestlers would still be eligible to compete at the Asian Games.
