Why Australia and Indias Uranium Deal Could Change Indias Nuclear Future

Prime Minister Narendra Modi clinched a long-awaited uranium supply agreement with Australia, which has the greatest known uranium deposits in the world, accounting for roughly one-third of global resources, on Thursday, giving India's ambitious aim to increase nuclear power a significant boost. The discovery occurs at a crucial time as India aims to boost nuclear power production from the current 8 GW to an ambitious 100 GW by 2047.

A civil nuclear cooperation that was first inked in 2014 but was essentially idle for almost ten years is now operationalized thanks to the deal. The administrative arrangements required for the commercial delivery of Australian uranium to India for peaceful uses under International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) safeguards have finally been finalized between Australia and India.

Following discussions with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese in Melbourne, Prime Minister Modi announced the development, saying, "Today, we have signed an important agreement in the field of nuclear energy." This will facilitate the flow of uranium from Australia to India and provide fresh momentum for our clean energy goals."
Australia has the biggest known uranium deposits in the world, accounting for over one-third of the global total, according to the World Nuclear Association. Australia produced 4,820 tons of uranium in 2022. With 8% of the world's uranium production, it was the fourth-largest producer in the world. Australia exports all of its uranium production.

Australia and India have completed the administrative arrangements required to allow the export of Australian uranium to India solely for peaceful purposes under IAEA safeguards, as stipulated in the Australia-India Nuclear Cooperation Agreement (2015), according to India's Ministry of External Affairs.
Since guaranteed nuclear fuel supplies are essential for reactors that need fuel continuously for approximately 60 years of operation, the breakthrough is anticipated to be welcomed by India's private sector, which intends to build many new nuclear reactors. Nuclear power projects have drawn attention from major industrial organizations like Adani, Reliance, Tata, JSW, Jindal, and Bajaj.

The development is much more important to India than just buying petroleum. The nation's nuclear program has long been beset by structural issues. India has comparatively small uranium deposits, despite having one of the greatest thorium stocks in the world. In order to get over this restriction, India's three-stage nuclear power program was created to maximize the utilization of uranium resources before finally switching to thorium-based energy systems. India has limited uranium reserves, as Union Science Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh has already told Parliament.

It allows for increased private sector involvement under regulatory supervision and modernizes the nation's nuclear structure.
In order to help India achieve its target of having 100 GW of nuclear power by 2047, the SHANTI Act was passed.According to government documents, the law is a crucial component of the Nuclear Energy Mission, which seeks to make nuclear power a significant part of India's low-carbon electricity supply rather than just a small contributor.
A new legal framework and guaranteed uranium supplies, according to industry observers, might spur substantial private investment in India's nuclear industry. According to BC Pathak, the former chairman and managing director of Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL), the SHANTI Act will help mobilize national resources to reach the 100 GW target and open the nuclear power business to several enterprises.

Australia exports all of its uranium production and does not run nuclear power facilities despite having an abundance of natural resources. It was the fourth-largest producer of uranium in the world in 2022.
