For the five-time winners Mumbai Indians, who are in a vulnerable situation, the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 season has begun on a familiar note. MI has only won one of their last four games, and they are under fire, particularly for their ineffective bowling assault. Even the world's best pacer, Jasprit Bumrah, has failed to take a single wicket in the first four games due to the circumstances. Given his tactical value, some of the criticism levelled at him may be harsh, but the magnitude of the MI bowling dilemma indicates that even their leader cannot be totally absolved of accountability.
Bumrah's influence from one end makes the term "poor" statistically wrong. He is still at the top in terms of control. Without a doubt, if MI bowlers had been able to apply sufficient pressure from the other end of the pitch as well, he would have taken more wickets. Although he has the best economy rate (8.20) of any bowler on his squad, there are several other players who have not only taken wickets but also produced much more brutal periods.
Bowlers like Mohammed Shami (6.25), Rashid Khan (6.87), Sunil Narine (7.45), Axar Patel (7.85), and Lungi Ngidi (8.04) have higher economy rates than Bumrah among those who have bowled at least eight overs. But what hurts is the "wicketless" label. Bumrah isn't destroying relationships even though he is stopping runs, at least in comparison to his own colleagues. His failure to produce early or mid-innings breakthroughs has exposed the rest of the attack in a format where wickets are the greatest method to limit the scoring rate.
The Mumbai Indians' Bowling Misery's Numbers
It's not just Bumrah who is having trouble increasing his wicket total. The current circumstances have been as harsh for other well-known pacers. Trent Boult, the star overseas bowler for the Mumbai Indians, has given up 110 runs for only one wicket in three games, resulting in a bloated economy of 12.22. Conversely, Deepak Chahar has had trouble being consistent and hasn't been able to deliver his signature powerplay strokes. With five wickets this season, Shardul Thakur is the team's highest wicket-taker. He has also been extremely costly, giving up more than 13 runs every over. The Mumbai Indians' bowling statistics taken as a whole paint a concerning picture. This season, they are the only bowling team to have given up more than 11 runs per over. The team's lack of penetration is also concerning, as they have only taken 15 wickets in four games.
Mumbai has given up the most runs per over in the tournament at 11.14 during the middle overs (7–16) phase. They have managed only seven wickets in this period. The only team with a poorer record for taking wickets in these vital middle overs is the Rajasthan Royals. It should be mentioned that Bumrah is the first Mumbai Indians pacer who has played two or more games without taking a wicket. In IPL 2026, Trent Boult, Shardul Thakur, and even Deepak Chahar have all claimed at least one scalp.
Bumrah is not the main cause of the issues, but he should also be held accountable.
Although it is obviously wrong to blame Bumrah for MI's misfiring bowling assault, it is also evident that, as the team's leader, he bears a greater responsibility than his teammates.Currently, the opposing teams not only appear comfortable taking on Bumrah, but they also understand how crucial it is to hold off Mumbai's star pacer and destroy others. Therefore, if the squad wants to stop this skid for the rest of the season, Bumrah must figure out a way to change this mindset and instill fear in hitters once more.
