P Chidambaram, a former Union minister and Congress leader, criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday for claiming that he made a speech about India's response to the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks, calling it "terribly wrong."
Chidambaram wrote on X that he was disappointed by the Prime Minister's remarks.
According to the Hon'ble Prime Minister, "India was prepared to react after 26/11, but the Congress government prevented India's armed forces from attacking Pakistan due to pressure from other nations." Each of the three elements of the statement is WRONG, dreadfully WRONG. The Hon'ble Prime Minister of India made up the words and claimed credit for them, which is disheartening to read," Chidambaram stated.
The comments were made the day after Prime Minister Modi mentioned a recent interview the senior Congress leader had given regarding the UPA government's response to Pakistan after the 26/11 strikes, without mentioning Chidambaram by name.
During a speech on Wednesday, Prime Minister Modi asked the Congress to reveal who, under duress from outside sources, chose to suspend military operations against Pakistan following the terror attacks. Mumbai is one of India's liveliest cities in addition to being the country's economic hub. For this reason, in 2008, terrorists decided to launch a significant attack in Mumbai. However, the ruling Congress government then delivered a message of weakness and capitulation to terrorism," he stated.
Recently, a senior Congress leader—who was even the former Home Minister—revealed big things in an interview," PM Modi continued. He asserted that our soldiers were prepared to attack Pakistan following the Mumbai incident. Everyone in the nation desired the same thing. However, that Congress politician said that pressure from another nation caused the then-government to halt India's soldiers from acting. Congress needs to explain who manipulated Mumbai's national sentiment and made this choice under pressure from abroad. The nation is entitled to know. The nation has repeatedly paid the price in lost lives as a result of Congress's cowardice, which bolstered terrorists and undermined national security.
Chidambaram described the UPA government's decision-making process following the attacks in an ABP News podcast on October 1.
He claimed that India's position at the time had been influenced by diplomatic pressure from around the world, especially the US. On November 30, 2008, a day after the terror attacks and when Shivraj Patil resigned, Chidambaram assumed the position of Home Minister.
