According to a joint study report produced by Deloitte and Google, Gen Z shoppers are driving the future of India's e-commerce retail sector.
The paper titled 'The $250 Billion Commerce Frontier' examines the current state of India's e-commerce sector and forecasts how things will evolve in the coming years.
The report predicts that by 2030, a younger, digital-native cohort of 220 million Gen Z shoppers will account for approximately 45% of online spending, accelerating digital-first discovery and hyper-personalised experiences.
However, even if India's online retail sector grew to $90 billion between 2019 and 2025, online consumer penetration remains at 30%, "significantly" lower than global counterparts, according to the survey. This suggests significant development potential."High GDP growth combined with low online shopper penetration indicates potential for Indian e-commerce," the survey stated.
So far, three primary market forces have been responsible for E-commerce expansion in India. These are:
11 crore new online Bharat shoppers and a 2.5 times increase in fast commerce.
The doubling of new online sellers and over 600 new direct-to-consumer (D2C) firms has created new retail categories and value commerce.
UPI has over 40 crore users, vernacular access, and over 19,000 operable pin numbers.Notably, new 'Bharat consumers' (those from tier 2 cities and beyond) have significantly altered audience dynamics and shopper demographics.
Tier 2 cities and smaller towns now account for more than 60% of online shoppers, about half of e-commerce spending, and nearly three-quarters of all orders, according to the survey.
The internet industry is expected to grow in the next years due to factors such as creator-led commerce, immersive experiences and tools, rapid commerce, shorter delivery times, and the use of intelligent AI.
These levers will onboard new customers, bridge the imagination gap in online purchasing, modify consumer expectations, establish powerful new habit loops, and streamline and simplify the shopping experience.
