According to the state government, a passenger bus carrying pilgrims from Mecca to Madinah crashed with a diesel tanker early on Monday morning, killing at least 42 Indian Umrah pilgrims, 16 of whom were from Hyderabad, Telangana.
According to preliminary reports obtained by the state government, the event happened around 1.30 a.m. IST at Mufrihat, approximately 160 kilometers from Madinah. There were 43 people aboard the bus, and only one is known to have survived thus far because the others were instantly burned to death.
There were 20 women and 11 children in the party, which reportedly left Hyderabad on November 9. Tragic events occurred while they were traveling to Madinah after completing their Umrah rites in Mecca.
At least sixteen Hyderabadis are among the deceased, Telangana Information Technology Minister D Sridhar Babu said reporters in Hyderabad. They are from Hyderabad's Bazarghat neighborhood in Mallepalli. He stated that information about the deceased is being gathered.
All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen president and Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi stated, "I spoke with Abu Mathen George, Deputy Chief of Mission (DCM) at the Indian Embassy in Riyadh, and he assured me that they are gathering information about the matter."
Owaisi added that he had shared the passengers' information with the foreign secretary and the Riyadh Embassy after contacting two travel companies in Hyderabad.
"I ask the Union Government, particularly EAM Dr. S. Jaishankar, to return the bodies to India and make sure that anyone who is hurt gets the care they need," he stated.
Soon after the accident, police and Saudi Civil Defense raced to the scene. Representatives from Umrah agencies and Indian officials also arrived on the scene to help with recovery and organize information for family back home.
Relatives of the pilgrims in Hyderabad are eagerly awaiting news, contacting officials and travel agencies in the hopes of hearing positive news.
On November 9, up to 20 travelers departed for Saudi Arabia, according to an Al Meena Travel Agency official in Bazarghat. Sixteen of them were on the bus back to Madinah after the prayers in Mecca. Mohammad Manzoor (50), Zaheen Begum (19), Shaukat Begam (57), Farheen Begum (43), Zakia Begum (47), Mastan Mohammad (55), Parveen Begum (35), Sohail Mohammad (23), Abdul Mohammad (24), Mohammad Maulana (62), Abdul Mohammad (57), Ghousiya Begum (46), Shehnaz Begum (41), Rahmat Bee Rehmatbee (80), and Raheem Unnisa (60) are the pilgrims from this travel agency are thought to be deceased.
A Revanth Reddy, the chief minister of Telangana, expressed profound astonishment over the terrible incident. According to an official statement from the CMO, the disaster happened while the bus was traveling from Mecca to Madina. He gave DGP B Shivadhar Reddy and chief secretary K Ramakrishna Rao instructions to gather information about the bus accident victims.
The chief minister also asked how many Telangana residents were on the bus. In order to take prompt relief action, the officials were also instructed to get in touch with the Saudi Embassy and the Ministry of External Affairs.
The chief secretary notified resident commissioner Gaurav Uppal Delhi per the chief minister's directives. The resident commissioner was instructed by the chief secretary to get information regarding the number of Telangana casualties of the tragedy.
