Outrage and anger have spread throughout the region in response to serious accusations made against a tax administration team in Kusmi village, Chhattisgarh. Two people have been gravely hurt and a 62-year-old tribal villager has died as a result of an alleged late-night attack by officials, including the Kusmi Sub-Divisional Magistrate.
SDM Karun Kumar Dahariya is one of four defendants in a murder case filed by the police. Road blockades, protests, and strong political reactions have resulted from the occurrence.
The revenue team reportedly came in Hanspur hamlet late on Sunday night in order to look into claims of illicit bauxite mining in the area. After residents allegedly blocked a truck bringing bauxite, tensions in the area had already increased.
According to witnesses, three villagers—62-year-old Ramnaresh Ram, 60-year-old Ajit Oraon, and 20-year-old Akash Agariya—were stopped close to Sarna at around 9 p.m. while they were making their way home from irrigating their wheat fields.
The injured claim they were pummeled without being properly questioned.
Eight or nine individuals stopped them and started beating them with sticks, according to one of the injured, Akash Agariya. He stated that they were traveling in a black Mahindra Thar and a white Bolero with the inscription "Chhattisgarh Government SDM" on it.
According to Ajit Oraon, seven or eight persons attacked them, and he lost consciousness during the incident. On the trip to Kusmi, Ramnaresh Ram's health deteriorated, and the hospital pronounced him dead.
While the other two are recuperating, police sources reveal that Ramnaresh Ram passed away while receiving treatment at Kusmi Community Health Center.
A murder case has been filed based on the panchnama, postmortem results, eyewitness reports, and scene examination.
Manjeet Kumar Yadav, Sudip Yadav, Vicky Singh, also known as Ajay Pratap Singh, and SDM Karun Dahariya have all been taken into custody and appear in court.
The arrest of the suspects and the start of legal proceedings were verified by Balrampur SP Vaibhav Banker.
The incident has caused a great deal of ire among Kusmi's tribal populations. At Shiv Chowk, villagers blocked traffic while yelling anti-SDM chants and calling for strict measures.
Protesters have called for a government job for one family member and Rs 1 crore in compensation for the deceased man's family. Using analogies to comparable activities in other jurisdictions, some protesters also called for drastic action against the accused.
Maheshwar, a former Congress MLA, claimed that the SDM killed a villager by beating him "without any fault" and called for stern punishment and fair compensation. Somnath Bhagat, a local, claimed that the SDM had a history of acting aggressively and harassing the residents. Independent verification of these assertions is still pending.
During the Chirmiri program, Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Dev Sai addressed the issue and said, "An investigation is ongoing. Anyone found culpable, regardless of identity, will be subject to severe punishment.
