On Monday, security authorities launched a counter-operation after suspected terrorists ambushed a patrol in Manipur's Ukhrul district, killing two Assam Rifles soldiers and injuring numerous more.
Around 15 km from Ukhrul town, in Nungshangkong, the attack occurred around 1:30 pm.
The dead were later identified by the Assam Rifles as Havildar Chandra Mohan Singh and Warrant Officer Balwant Singh. Assam Rifles Director General Lt Gen Vikas Lakhera and all ranks of the force paid "solemn tribute" to the two troops and sent their families their sincere condolences in a statement, stating that they had given the "supreme sacrifice in the line of duty."
According to defense officials, security officers began an operation to find the attackers while the wounded personnel were taken to a hospital.The attackers have been apprehended. They are engaged in an ongoing gunfight, a senior defense officer told The New Indian Express.
Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh sent his sympathies to the grieving families and denounced the murders, which were carried out by Ukhrul Police Station.The government will not stand by while such heinous acts of violence are committed. He declared, "Those accountable for the killings will be apprehended and dealt with in accordance with the law."
In addition to lamenting the killings, State Home Minister Govindas Konthoujam stated that such acts of violence will only impede attempts to bring about long-term peace and stability in the state plagued by ethnic warfare.He declared, "The state government is unwavering in its commitment to upholding law and order, and I am confident that all those responsible will be identified and brought to justice strictly in accordance with the law."
Since February, there have been multiple violent occurrences in the Naga-majority Ukhrul district. Following an alleged attack on a Naga villager by a group of Kuki miscreants, tensions increased, resulting in road blockades, arson, and civilian fatalities.
On Sunday night, unidentified gunmen opened fire in Thingkhojang hamlet in Kangpokpi district, injuring two residents, including an eight-year-old girl.For medical attention, Nengneichong Kipgen (56) and Lamneingah Kipgen (8) were transferred to Imphal.
The Kuki CSO Working Committee, South West Sadar Hills, planned a 24-hour closure along National Highway-37 in protest of the firing.
At a relief camp, the chief minister also gave 26 internally displaced people (IDPs) with chronic ailments, such as cancer and kidney disease, Rs 1 lakh apiece.
Singh promised that the government will keep helping displaced people with severe medical conditions and stated that the aid was meant to lessen their suffering.
