Umar un-Nabi, a 35-year-old Jammu & Kashmiri who was described by his family as "quiet and studious," has become a main suspect in the high-intensity blast case near Red Fort that shocked the country and its capital.
Umar, who works as a doctor, is thought to have been the driver of the Hyundai i20 that detonated on Monday close to the Lal Quila metro station in Delhi, killing at least ten people and wounding numerous more.
Additionally, he is allegedly connected to the large-scale raids in Faridabad a few days ago that resulted in the recovery of almost 3,000 kg of ammonium nitrate. Seven persons, including two doctors, were arrested as a result of the security agencies' operation, which uncovered a "white-collar terror network."
Several significant findings about Umar un-Nabi have emerged as the investigation into the explosion near Red Fort continues:
How the raids in Faridabad were connected to Umar
Prior to this week's explosion near Red Fort, Umar had direct connections to two physicians connected to the terror module network that was raided in Faridabad. Adeel Ahmed Rather was one of those physicians; Umar had previously worked as a senior resident physician at Government Medical College (GMC), Anantnag.
Adeel had ties to both Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) and Ansar Ghazwat-ul-Hind (AGuH), a local branch that supported Sharia law, according to a later investigation. He and another doctor from Kashmir, Muzammil Shakeel Ganaie, were accused of storing explosives at the seized Faridabad facility.
Muzammil and Umar also had close ties, as they belonged to the same village in Jammu and Kashmir's Pulwama and had worked together at Al-Falah Medical College and Hospital in Faridabad.
“In Anantnag, Umar worked as a senior resident at GMC, where he met Dr Adeel. Later, in Faridabad, he and Dr Muzammil worked at Al-Falah University,” said a Delhi Police Special Cell officer. Together, the three doctors reportedly operated a terror logistics network stretching from Pulwama to NCR, linked to the JeM.
Umar tried to 'destroy' evidence after raids
After investigators uncovered a link between the blast near Red Fort and the terror network raids, they also found out that Umar likely “panicked” after the searches in Faridabad.
While his associates were detained in Faridabad and Jammu and Kashmir as part of the major crackdown, Umar had escaped. However, he acted "hastily" fearing cops could narrow down on him.
“Raids by security agencies across multiple locations in Delhi-NCR and Pulwama, recovery of significant quantities of explosives, are believed to have led the suspect to act hastily under mounting pressure,” an officer told HT, requesting anonymity.
'Bomb premature, not fully developed'
The bomb allegedly used by Umar in the Red Fort explosion was "premature" as he had been acting under "panic and desperation", the officer said.
“The explosion was caused by panic and desperation due to raids carried out by the security agencies to nab them
Police have determined that Umar drove the Hyundai i20 that blew up near Red Fort, and the explosives for the bomb were from the same batch found by authorities in Faridabad. An officer told HT that Umar panicked and rushed to Red Fort after the agencies' success. This event was part of a larger series of events that exposed a big terror group and led to finding a lot of explosives. Umar un-Nabi, who investigators say had been panicking for a while, brought ammonium nitrate fuel oil to Delhi. He used five cell phones, all turned off after October 30. He stopped working as a doctor and went into hiding after the November 9 raids in Faridabad, where 2,900kg of ammonium nitrate, detonators, timers, and rifles were seized. A senior officer stated that Umar was feeling pressured and knew he was being closed in on. When news of the ammonium nitrate seizures got out, he fled to Delhi with ammonium nitrate fuel oil and a detonator.
A video from a surveillance camera showed Umar driving a Hyundai i20 car just before the blast that killed 10 people close to Red Fort. This was not the first time he had driven that car, as an officer stated that Umar was seen in the same car in a CCTV video from Faridabad's Sector 37 on October 29.
The officer stated that they possessed knowledge indicating he and Muzammil had been acquainted for many years and were organizing the Red Fort explosion at the university.
