Complaints about the Tarn Taran byelection: Punjab DGP is summoned by the EC on November 25

Gaurav Yadav, the director general of police for Punjab, was summoned by the Election Commission of India (ECI) on November 25 in response to allegations regarding police behavior during the model code of conduct (MCC) enforced for the Tarn Taran assembly byelection on November 11.
According to sources, the DGP has been asked to provide the commission with an update on the instances and arrests made during the poll code. After the Shiromani Akali Dal filed complaints, the ECI ordered the police to examine every FIR filed during the MCC period. Nine FIRs against Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) employees were reported to the ECI by the police, who claimed that the cases were filed in compliance with the law.

Ram Singh, special director general of technical support services, carried out the review.
According to sources, "the commission was apparently dissatisfied with the report and has now called the police chief to explain and present the facts."
The Punjab chief electoral officer (CEO) had already expressed the commission's concerns regarding police behavior during the bypoll process, specifically the "wrongful registration of cases and arrests," in a letter to the police head.According to the letter, "coordinated and concerted actions" by the state police, involving not only the Tarn Taran police but also other districts like Amritsar, Batala, Moga, and other adjacent districts, were noted in a report that the police observer gave to the ECI. It stated that this created grave doubts about the fairness of law enforcement during the election season.
Additionally, the ECI mandated that a senior officer not lower than the rank of assistant director general of police (ADGP) review all such cases and arrests, and that the report be delivered to the chief electoral officer of Punjab by November 10.
Dr. Ravjot Kaur Grewal, the senior superintendent of police in Tarn Taran, was suspended at the time of the ECI's directive. After the special DGP requested an extension, the poll panel granted him three additional days to finish the assignment.
The FIRs were allegedly filed to scare its employees, according to the SAD. The party submitted a second complaint with the Election Commission of India (ECI) on Monday, claiming that unlawful arrests were made during the bypoll campaign and that "fake FIRs" were filed against party employees. Party spokesperson Daljit Singh Cheema accused the AAP of abusing government resources during the Tarn Taran bypoll in a written complaint.
Harmeet Singh Sandhu, the candidate of the ruling AAP, defeated Sukhwinder Kaur of the SAD, his closest opponent, by 12,091 votes in the Tarn Taran assembly bypoll.
