Elections for 24 Rajya Sabha seats in ten states will take place on June 18

In addition to by-elections for two open Upper House seats in Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu, the Election Commission said on Friday that polling for 24 Rajya Sabha seats in ten states would take place on June 18. Leaders elected to the Rajya Sabha went on to become MLAs in their respective states, necessitating the bypolls.
The EC stated in a statement that elections for Rajya Sabha seats will take place on various dates from June 21 to July 19 in ten states where the incumbents are retiring.
Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, and Karnataka will each have four seats in the Rajya Sabha elections; Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan will have three seats each; Jharkhand will have two seats; and Manipur, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, and Mizoram will each have one seat.

Two seats in Jharkhand will be up for election, one of which was left empty following Shibu Soren's death on August 4, 2025.
Additionally, one seat each from Manipur, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, and Mizoram will be up for election.
Former Prime Minister HD Deve Gowda, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, and senior Congressman Digvijaya Singh are among the notable figures finishing their Rajya Sabha terms.
Nominations must be submitted by June 8th.The deadline for withdrawing a candidature has been set for June 11, and the examination of nomination papers is scheduled for June 9.Voting will take place on June 18 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and vote counting is set for the same day at 5 p.m. It is anticipated that the election process would be finished by June 20.
According to the EC, voters must mark their preferences on ballot papers using only integrated violet-colored sketch pens that meet specifications provided by the Returning Officer. It will not be allowed to use any other pen.
The poll panel stated that observers will be used for close monitoring.
