For fireworks manufacturers, Trumps visit to China brightens the July 4 festivities

The U.S. flag and the phrase "Fight for America" are displayed alongside an image of U.S. President Donald Trump raising his fist in defiance following a botched assassination attempt in 2024 on a package of Chinese fireworks.
According to Wilson Lam, U.S. business manager for Black Scorpion Fireworks in the southern Chinese city of Liling, this year's July 4 celebrations will be "a lot better" than previous year.
Lam claimed that although manufacturers were having difficulty with tariff increases of over 100 percentage points last year, their reversal has increased orders for his brand from American consumers by 15% to 30% this year.It is the international face of a three-decade-old plant in an area that has produced pyrotechnics for over 1,300 years, first intended to drive out evil spirits.
"Husbands and wives fight too, that's normal," he said, speaking amid a sea of fireworks boxes draped in U.S. patriotic symbols, from eagles to the Statue of Liberty. Lam added that Trump's visit to Beijing, scheduled for mid-May, just weeks before the 250th anniversary of U.S. independence, demonstrates how intertwined the world's two biggest economies remain. However, as we are the world's largest trading partners, we cannot survive apart."

FOR U.S. INDEPENDENCE DAY, MADE IN CHINA
The phrase "Make America Great Again" from Trump's presidential campaign, which pledged to restore the jobs that American workers had lost to China and other countries, was printed on certain boxes.
According to data from the Observatory of Economic Complexity, China's fireworks exports made up two-thirds of global sales last year, although their value decreased from $1.16 billion to $1.14 billion.
Orders for July 4 festivities are typically shipped by factories in April, but many were delayed last year due to a 145 percentage point increase in U.S. tariffs following Trump's "Liberation Day" duties.
China's retaliation compelled Washington to reduce obstacles in a matter of weeks. Lam's fireworks were transported after Independence Day and were lit during other holidays, such New Year's.

"LET THEM DO FIREWORKS"
Liuyang, a provincial city with more than 400 fireworks outlets and a population of slightly under 1.5 million, provides up to 70% of their raw materials. Regular fireworks celebrations there and in Pingxiang, its smaller neighbour, draw large crowds of tourists.
In order to avoid the inconvenience of tariffs, Liu Fangguo, the founder of the Shengding Fireworks Factory in Pingxiang, made the difficult decision to significantly shift exports away from the United States. We've made every effort to switch to domestic sales or export to foreign nations," he stated. "We gradually recovered but the impact (of tariffs) is still there."The head of the American Chamber of Commerce in the commercial center of Shanghai, Eric Zheng, stated that while most members anticipated Trump's visit to prolong a temporary "truce" in trade hostilities, others were concerned that ties between the United States and China may deteriorate once more."It will be a loss for U.S. consumers if you move away from China," Zheng stated, adding that they yearned for China's well-made, reasonably priced products, which included everything from clothing and shoes to fireworks. Thus, allow them to create fireworks.
