Howitzers and Apache Choppers: US Approves $428 Million in Defence Assistance for India

According to the US State Department, the Donald Trump administration has approved two possible foreign military sales to India totalling $428.2 million. These sales would cover sustainment support for M-777 A2 ultra-light howitzers and follow-on support for AH-64E Apache helicopters.
The Bureau of Political-Military Affairs sent separate congressional notifications outlining the proposed agreements. The M-777 A2 Ultra-Light long-term sustainability support package According to the statement, Howitzers, which are projected to be worth $230 million, include "ancillary items; spares; repair and return; training; technical assistance; field service representative; depot capability; and other related elements of logistics and program support."

BAE Systems will be the main contractor for the Howitzer support package.
Boeing and Lockheed Martin are the contractors for the $198.2 million additional package for the sale of follow-on support services and associated equipment for Apache helicopters. In 2017, the United States supplied the Indian Army with its first two artillery gun systems.
The State Department authorised a potential $198.2 million sale connected to Apache aircraft in a different announcement.According to the announcement, the US Department of State has decided to approve a potential foreign military sale to the Indian government for the acquisition of Apache helicopters, supporting equipment, and follow-on support services.

The planned sales would help Washington achieve its larger strategic goals in the Indo-Pacific area, according to both announcements.Using the same language in both notifications, the State Department stated, "This proposed sale will support the foreign policy and national security objectives of the United States by helping to strengthen the US-Indian strategic relationship and to improve the security of a major defence partner which continues to be an important force for political stability, peace, and economic progress in the Indo-Pacific and South Asia regions."
The planned sales will bolster India's homeland defence, discourage regional threats, and increase the country's capacity to handle present and future challenges."India will have no difficulty absorbing these articles and services into its armed forces," the statement stated.The State Department added that there would be "no adverse impact on US defence readiness" and that the proposed sales "will not alter the basic military balance in the region."
The clearances coincide with the United States and India's growing defence collaboration. Over the past ten years, the two countries have progressively strengthened their military ties through technology-sharing programs, joint military drills, and arms sales.
