Concerns about an escalating power crisis have added to the public's discomfort as Odisha continues to experience a severe and protracted heatwave. Residents are apparently finding it difficult to deal with the severe summer weather as a result of unplanned power outages in some places and extended power outages in others.
People in many districts of Odisha are complaining about the inconsistent power supply. Residents in a number of locations are apparently experiencing electricity outages that linger for hours, while certain areas are seeing repeated unplanned disruptions. This has led to resentment and criticism of power distribution corporations.
Rising temperatures have caused a substantial increase in electricity demand, making the situation more challenging. Based on the information that is currently available, the Odisha government is using a power exchange mechanism to buy more electricity in order to close the supply-demand gap.
According to reports, the state's peak-hour electricity demand has reached almost 6,600 MW, with an approximately 55 MW shortage. The government is apparently using power exchanges to purchase electricity at a rate of Rs 3.85 per unit in order to control the deficit and guarantee continuous supply.
In the meantime, the Union Power Ministry has admitted that this year has seen an unprecedented increase in the nation's need for electricity. Officials blame the jump on the extreme warmth, which has led to a record-breaking demand nationally by greatly increasing the use of cooling appliances and power consumption.
