Several fans and experts were surprised when in-form batter Shreyas Iyer was not included in the Indian team for the upcoming Test series against England.
Many fans event went to the extent of accusing Team India head coach Gautam Gambhir for it by saying that the former KKR mentor had a great role in it as he was not in good terms with Iyer during his KKR days.
When Gambhir was asked about it, he responded rather harshly by saying- ‘I’m not the selector'.
However, the former southpaw made a u-turn in his response when he was recently asked about Iyer's exclusion again.
Gambhir said on Thursday that anyone can earn a call-up into the national Test team considering they continue to perform in domestic cricket.
The Team India head coach had a rather measured response, saying a limited number of people can be picked in the squad, but the management is taking note of performances in domestic cricket.
"Anyone can be called if they are in good form. We can only pick 18. But I believe it’s always about being open to people who are in good form and can deliver,” Gambhir told reporters in Mumbai ahead of the Indian team's departure for England.
