Suvendu Adhikari, the chief minister of West Bengal, confirmed on Thursday that nine people had died and 20 were injured after an under-construction warehouse collapsed in Kolkata's Taratala district a day ago.
He also declared ₹10 lakh in compensation for the relatives of the deceased and ₹1 lakh for each person hurt in the event when he made the news in the Assembly.

Adhikari added that the architectural plan of the collapsed warehouse originally included the signature of Firhad Hakim, a close adviser of Mamata Banerjee and a former mayor of Kolkata.
The chief minister stated on Wednesday that there were flaws in the approved designs for the warehouse based on preliminary information he obtained from the Kolkata Municipal Corporation.
In the wake of the warehouse collapse, he has ordered a thorough audit of all under-construction commercial projects authorized by the previous TMC government and suspended their work until July 31.

The occurrence was attributed to the "sins" of the former Trinamool Congress (TMC) government, according to State Minister Moumita Biswas Misra, who said that the party's prior acts had a negative effect on the entire state of West Bengal.
"This is the outcome of their (former state government's) transgression, of what they did to all of West Bengal...Such incidents will happen if unplanned, low-quality building is carried out. With the help of our State Government and Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, 24 individuals may be saved. For the relatives of the eight people killed in the collapse of an under-construction godown shed in Kolkata's Taratala neighborhood, Prime Minister Narendra Modi approved an ex-gratia payment of ₹2 lakh apiece. The PMO claims that the Center will give ₹50,000 to the 20 victims of the accident.
