A low-pressure area has formed over the west-central and adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal, off the north Andhra Pradesh and south Odisha coasts, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Wednesday.
The system is likely to move in a west-northwest direction, intensifying into a well-marked low-pressure area within 24 hours, before crossing north Andhra Pradesh and south Odisha over the next 48 hours.
Three-Day Rain Alert Issued
Under its influence, several Odisha districts are likely to experience widespread rainfall from Wednesday, with the IMD issuing a three-day heavy rain warning.
For today, Koraput and Malkangiri districts have been placed under an orange warning for very heavy rain, accompanied by thunderstorms and wind speeds of 30–40 kmph. Other southern and coastal districts are likely to experience moderate to heavy showers.
Coastal and Southern Districts on Watch
On August 14 and 15, heavy rain coupled with gusty winds is likely over southern Odisha and coastal regions. Localised flooding, waterlogging in urban areas, and landslides in hilly terrain are possible, warned the weather department.
Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea until August 16, as rough to very rough conditions are expected in the Bay of Bengal. The Special Relief Commissioner’s office has alerted all district administrations to remain prepared for emergency response.
Earlier Meteorological Update
On Tuesday, the IMD regional centre had informed about the possible formation of a low-pressure system. A trough was observed running from south Bihar to north Odisha up to 1.5 km above mean sea level, while an upper air cyclonic circulation lay over central parts of the Bay of Bengal between 3.1 and 5.8 km above mean sea level.
