"Searching for the right story" is the director Sundar Cs reason for leaving the Rajinikanth movie.

Earlier this month, Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan revealed that they will co-star in a movie called Thalaivar 173, which is expected to be released around Pongal 2027. Sundar C was assigned to oversee. A few days following that announcement, Sundar C said in a statement that he had chosen not to appear in the movie, citing "unforeseen and unavoidable circumstances." Kamal has now spoken up about the director's unexpected departure and the future of the movie.
What was said by Kamal Haasan
The actor-politician told reporters at the airport on Saturday, "Sundar C has explained the reason for his withdrawal from the project through a press release."

He added, "Expect the unexpected," in response to a question about the types of stories they hope to work on for the project.
Sundar C's departure
In the meantime, Sundar C expressed regret to fans for choosing not to appear in the movie, saying that it was a "difficult decision." Since before Coolie was released, Rajinikanth and Kamal have been hinting at their partnership. Kamal is currently filming a project that has not yet been revealed. He was most recently seen in Mani Ratnam's Thug Life. So far, no formal announcement has been made regarding the film's director.
