According to a Wall Street Journal story, the US military employed artificial intelligence in their effort to apprehend Nicolas Maduro, the president of Venezuela at the time, last month. The Pentagon's first AI model developer for classified missions was Anthropic.
Adoption by the military is seen as a significant boost to AI businesses' credibility since it gives them legitimacy and supports their high investor-driven valuations in a highly competitive market.
Claude was employed in the operation even though Anthropic's usage standards forbid him from inciting violence, creating weapons, or carrying out surveillance.
Following the bombing at multiple locations, Maduro and his spouse were taken from Caracas.
"Any use of Claude-whether in the private sector or across government-is required to comply with our Usage Policies, which govern how Claude can be deployed. We work closely with our partners to ensure compliance", Anthropic's spokesman said.
Claude was deployed because Palantir Technologies, a data company whose tools are used by the Pentagon, has a partnership with Anthropic. Anthropic's concerns regarding the usage of Claude have made US officials consider cancelling contracts worth up to $200 million, the Wall Street Journal reported.
Anthropic Chief Executive Dario Amodei has called for greater regulation and guardrails to prevent harm from AI and has publicly expressed concerns about AI being used in autonomous lethal operations and domestic surveillance, which are two major sticking points in its current contract with the Pentagon.
Referring to talks with Anthropic, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth declared in January that the Pentagon would not work with AI models that "won't allow you to fight wars," according to the Journal.
Last June, Anthropic signed the $200 million deal.
The majority of the specialized tools being developed by numerous AI companies for the US military are only accessible on unclassified networks that are often used for military administration. The only one that is accessible through third parties in classified circumstances is Anthropic, but the government is still subject to the usage guidelines set forth by the corporation.
