Tradition of unity: A centuries-old connection between two Odisha villages comes life at the Chaitra festival.

The Chaitra Benta festival in Ekamba village, Jeypore block, Odisha's Koraput district, saw an unusual display of solidarity as residents from Gadapadar and Ekamba came together to enjoy the holiday. Ekamba residents had extended invites to Gadapadar villagers ten days in advance, following a long-standing practice.
Following the invitation, residents from both tribal clans assembled at Ekamba and enthusiastically joined in the festivities. People of various ages attended the celebrations, where guests were greeted warmly and treated with affection.
A Tradition with Historical Roots
The relationship between Gadapadar and Ekamba is not new. It originated during the reign of monarchs and has been passed down from generation to generation.

As part of this tradition, whenever a festival is organised in one village, the other is invited, reinforcing their deep-rooted connection that has stood the test of time.

Message of Harmony

The celebrations also carried a broader message of unity and coexistence. “People should see this and take it as an example to live in peace and harmony and celebrate togetherness,” a villager said.

He also pointed out that in today’s times, when differences among families, friends, and communities are increasingly visible, such traditions offer an important lesson.
