Following a period of turbulent political vacuum, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) won 209 seats out of 297 in the 13th parliamentary elections. Tarique Rahman, the recently sworn-in prime minister of Bangladesh, appears to be the target of an unexpected nickname.
Rahman has been referred to as a "engineer" by members of the National Citizens Party (NCP) and Jamaat-e-Islami, not because of his academic credentials but rather because other NCP and Jamaat leaders have asserted that Rahman had "engineered" the election results.
Social media took notice after NCP leader Nasiruddin Patwary referred to Rahman as a "engineer" on Facebook. Patwary wrote, "Congratulations! Engineer Tarique Rahman," on February 14. Congratulations on your achievement in the National Election Engineering 13th batch.
One Facebook user, Amir Hossain Robin, said, "London theke engineer pass," a mocking jab at the prime minister who had been living in self-exile for 17 years. Rahman has been the target of social media mockery. "The man who became an engineer without educational qualifications" was written by Maksuda Akter, another user.
AI-generated photos of Rahman wearing construction gear are also making the rounds online. The AI image was shared on Facebook with the remark, "The man. The myth." The myth. The engineer.
Claims of Election Rigging
Election manipulation has allegedly occurred, according to the opposition parties Jamaat-e-Islami and NCP. According to NCP spokesperson Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuyain, they had "clear evidence of result tampering" during a news conference."We are getting clear evidence of result tampering aimed at the 11-party alliance's top candidates," he said.
Rahman, meantime, has denied claims of electoral "engineering" and stated that his sole tactic was to curry favor with voters. "The goal of our engineering was to gain favor. "Thank God, we were able to accomplish that," Rahman stated following a press conference following the election.
Following his party's resounding victory in the parliamentary election, Bangladesh Nationalist Party leader Tarique Rahman was sworn in as prime minister on Tuesday, signaling a significant political change in the South Asian country.
Rahman's academic credentials
Rahman holds a Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC), which is the same as passing the 12th grade.
