On Monday morning at the Central Stadium in Thiruvananthapuram, Congress's VD Satheesan, who was selected by the party ten days after the Kerala election results were announced, took the oath of office as Kerala Chief Minister, restoring the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) to power following a ten-year break.
Satheesan and his 20-member Cabinet were sworn in by Kerala Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar.
Among those present at the swearing-in ceremony were Congress head Mallikarjun Kharge, top party officials Rahul Gandhi, and Wayanad parliamentarian Priyanka Gandhi Vadra.
Following the oath, the 61-year-old chief minister crossed the stage to welcome the chief ministers of the Congress who had come to witness the occasion. Both Rajeev Chandrasekhar of the BJP and Pinarayi Vijayan, the outgoing chief minister, were on stage. Everyone shook hands with the new chief minister.
Senior Congressmen Ramesh Chennithala, K Muraleedharan, and Sunny Joseph, as well as leaders of the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) PK Kunhalikutty, PK Basheer, N Samsudheen, KM Shaji, and VE Abdul Gafoor, make up the 20-member Cabinet.
Other ministers in the Cabinet are Mons Joseph, Shibu Baby John, Anoop Jacob, CP John, AP Anil Kumar, T Siddique, PC Vishnunath, Roji M John, Bindu Krishna, M Liju, KA Thulasi and O J Janeesh.
Additionally, Satheesan has declared that Shanimol Usman will be the Assembly's Deputy Speaker and senior Congressman Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan will be its Speaker. The position of Government Chief Whip has been assigned to MLA Apu John Joseph.
With 102 seats in the 140-member House, the UDF won a resounding victory in the Kerala elections. With 63 seats, the Congress became the largest party, followed by the IUML with 22 seats. The BJP was able to secure three seats, while the LDF won 35.
Many saw Satheesan as the natural candidate because he was recognised as the mastermind behind the Congress revival following two unprecedented back-to-back periods by the Left-led LDF.However, KC Venugopal, the party's General Secretary of Organization, who has long been associated with Delhi politics, was the guy the Congress central leadership had preferred for the top position.
The MLAs had supported the decision made by the Central leaders. They were the supporters of Satheesan and the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), an ally of the Congress.
The leaders of the Congress in Delhi were angry when pro-him posters appeared. Rahul and Priyanka Gandhi received threats at Wayanad that the constituency will do an Amethi, meaning they would not be allowed to run in the next election.
Satheesan's path was ultimately paved by a phone call between former Kerala Chief Minister AK Antony and INDIA bloc chairperson Sonia Gandhi.Eleven of Satheesan's cabinet colleagues, including Ramesh Chennithala, who was a candidate for the top position, Sunny Joseph, K Muraleedharan, AP Anil Kumar, PC Vishnunadh, Roji M. John, Bindhu Krishna, M Liju, T Siddique, KA Thulasi, and OJ Janeesh, are also taking the oath.
Five cabinet positions would be held by the Congress ally Indian Union Muslim League, or IUML: PK Kunhalikutyy, KM Shaji, V Abdul Gafoor, N Shamsuddin, and PK Basheer.
Mons Joseph (Kerala Congress-Joseph), Shibu Baby John (Revolutionary Socialist Party), Anoop Jacob (Kerala Congress-Jacob), and C.P. John (Communist Marxist Party) will also be in the administration.
Up to 14 of the cabinet's members are new. CP John and IUML leaders N Shamsuddin, K M Shaji, PK Basheer, and VE Abdul Gafoor are on the list, as are Congress leaders P C Vishnunadh, Roji M John, Bindu Krishna, T Siddique, K A Thulasi, and O J Janeesh.
Satheesan has no experience in administration, in contrast to Venugopal. He would actually be Kerala's first Chief Minister to start again in that regard.
However, the Chief Minister designate has already started the process by declaring a number of significant adjustments that will put an end to the state's VIP culture and financial luxury.
Satheesan had often brought attention to the state's severe financial situation both during his time in the opposition and in the lead-up to the election. He has now proposed a number of austerity measures, one of which is the elimination of the large VIP convoy culture that has long irritated the populace.
According to the Chief Minister, he would only have one escort car and a pilot vehicle when travelling. There won't be any ambulances or security cars.He has rejected the custom of buying brand-new luxury cars for ministers each time a new government takes power, which is another clear indication of economic restraint. According to him, ministers—including the chief minister—will keep utilising the cars that were provided during the previous administration.
Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy, his Himachal counterpart Sukhvinder Sukhu, Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar, and other leaders would be present at the event today.
