According to CNN, US President Donald Trump stated on Friday (local time) that he is confident Washington has found a way to bring about peace between Russia and Ukraine, but he emphasized that the plan would only forward if Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky gave his approval.
"We believe we can achieve peace, but he must give his approval. Speaking to reporters at the Oval Office, Trump stated, "I think they're getting fairly close, but I don't want to predict."
His comments coincide with increased talks on a new peace plan produced by the United States that Kyiv is presently reviewing. According to CNN, the concept is still being developed and is anticipated to undergo substantial changes as talks go on.
As Ukraine considers the ramifications of the US proposal, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky cautioned earlier on Friday that the nation is going through one of the most difficult times in its history, according to Al Jazeera.
Zelensky emphasized the importance of national unity and reaffirmed that he would never betray the Ukrainian people while speaking at a public event outside his Kyiv office.
"This is one of the most challenging times in our history... Ukraine now has to make a very tough decision: either lose its dignity or run the risk of losing a significant ally, Zelensky stated.
"I will fight 24/7 to ensure that at least two points in the plan are not overlooked - the dignity and freedom of Ukrainians," he stated.
According to CNN, which cited a Western official familiar with the ongoing discussions, a new peace proposal for Ukraine that is being discussed within the Trump administration may entail Kyiv ceding territory in the eastern Donbas region and agreeing to limitations on its military capabilities in exchange for US-backed security guarantees.
The idea is still a work in progress, according to CNN, and any final agreement would need concessions from both Russia and Ukraine, who have been at odds since 2014. Following Moscow's invasion in 2022, the crisis escalated into a full-scale war.
The officials emphasized that some of the aspects that are now in circulation, such as those that are thought to support Moscow's requests, are not final and are anticipated to alter as negotiations go on.
According to CNN, US President Donald Trump has studied and approved the 28-point proposal.
It is Washington's most recent attempt to resurrect peace initiatives and put an end to the conflict, which has lasted for almost three years.
Kyiv has previously rejected some of the clauses, especially those that ask for Ukrainian territorial concessions in areas that are not entirely under Russian authority.
