The Department of Homeland Security said an Indian semi-truck driver who murdered three people in California while driving under the influence had entered the country illegally. After a fatal collision in Ontario, California on Tuesday that claimed three lives and wounded four more, 21-year-old Jashanpreet Singh was taken into custody.
Singh is accused of being under the influence of drugs when his lorry crashed into slow-moving traffic on Ontario's 10 Freeway.
illegally entered the United States
Jashanpreet Singh, an Indian national, entered the United States illegally in 2022 by crossing the US-Mexico border, the Department of Homeland Security reported CBS News.
He struck an SUV and multiple other cars on Tuesday while operating a Freightliner tractor-trailer.
A chain reaction involving eight cars, including four large rigs, was triggered by the incident.
Singh was charged with gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, inflicting bodily injury, and driving under the influence of drugs after being taken into custody in relation to the eight-vehicle crash.
Seeking a better life
Jashanpreet Singh had been residing in Yuba County, California, following her unlawful entry into the US.
Gurjot Malhar, Singh's acquaintance, was interviewed by CBS reporters on Wednesday night. Malhar called Singh a "amazing" man who had come to the US in pursuit of a better life.
"He is an incredible man... Malhar remarked, "He would speak in a normal, joyful manner, always with love and care." "To me, he was like a brother."
"It will be difficult to earn dollars here coming from India.... He therefore desired to continue. "Trying to be a truck driver was his big step," Malhar continued.
Whether Singh had a valid commercial driver's license at the time of the collision is not immediately apparent. In August, the United States ceased to grant employment visas to commercial truck drivers.
