A large-scale midnight raid by Jagatsinghpur Police at Beheram Basti near Tarikunda under Sadar Police Station on Sunday resulted in the detention of four suspected Bangladeshi nationals and the recovery of a substantial amount of weapons. The operation, which was initiated based on intelligence inputs about illegal settlers and suspected arms storage, caused a brief altercation in which Additional SP Satyabrata Das and two constables were injured. According to sources, a country-made revolver, machetes, and several sharp weapons were taken from the rented home, Sikandar Alam, alias Siku, fled the scene just prior to the raid and is still at large.
Intelligence on Illegal Settlers Caused the Raid
Following specific reports that foreign nationals were being housed at many rental units built without authorization, police teams moved into the area. In the past, locals had reported unusual activity and the frequent discovery of firearms in the area. A verification-led operation was initiated after officers reported that around thirty suspected Bangladeshi nationals had been residing in the cluster.
When police officers tried to enter the building during the raid, they encountered opposition, which led to a fight. In the presence of an Executive Magistrate, the team secured the area, detained four people for interrogation, and started methodical searches despite the obstacles.
Additional verification of adjacent secured lodgings was triggered by the finding of sharp-edged weapons and a country-made pistol.
Locals Allege Illegal Occupation for Four Years
Beheram Basti residents reported to authorities that over the previous four years, unapproved buildings had been constructed in the community to rent out space to Bangladeshi nationals. They claimed that numerous complaints had been filed and that a raid had been conducted a month prior, but the primary accused had also managed to flee at that time.
Weapons are found in this location every other day. This is a really worrying development, and we are worried about our kids who attend schools and colleges in nearby areas. We are appreciative of the police for conducting this operation and finding such a sizable cache of guns. Local citizen Manas Chandra Mishra declared, "We demand that these settlers' homes be demolished."
Laxmikant Swain, another resident, claimed that they had reported the rental units to the police about two months prior. He continued by saying that the homeowner had been warned by the police during a previous operation, but the accused had once more escaped capture.
Authorities Verify Previous Surveillance
According to Jagatsinghpur SDPO Ajinkya Mane, the property has been monitored in response to intelligence reports. He verified that many weapons, including a locally made handgun, had been found during the authorities' examination of the property while the Executive Magistrate was there.
"We had information and suspicions that a man by the name of Sikandar Alam was providing illegal Bangladeshi squatters with shelter here. He was able to escape the last time we raided this house. All of the recovered weapons are being verified, and more details will be made public afterward, he stated.
