In order to collect the body of climber "Green Boots" from the top slopes of Mount Everest, the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) has issued a tender to employ a specialised high-altitude recovery agency. For thirty years, the climber's lifeless body in the 8,000-meter-high "death zone" of the mountain, where oxygen is short, has been a sombre reminder of the difficulties involved in reaching the highest peak in the world.
According to a source in The Tribune, the difficult rescue is slated to take place between June and September of this year. A group of expert Sherpas are expecting to reach the death zone, retrieve the body, and carry it down the mountain before returning the lifeless remains to India via Nepal.For the mission, at least six highly skilled Sherpas with knowledge of technical retrieval operations above 8000 meters may be sent. In addition, the organization winning the contract would need to obtain authorisation from the Chinese government in Tibet, plan transportation across the Tibet-Nepal border, fulfil the legal requirements for repatriation, and guarantee the preservation of the remains.
The winning bidder must also "use appropriate preservation techniques for handling of the dead body that has been lying for decades in sub-zero conditions, to ensure respectful and safe handling".
The climber got his moniker from the lime-green boots, but nobody knows whose body it is. He was one of six Indian climbers who were part of the ITBP and whose 1996 attempt to reach the summit via the North Ridge route failed miserably. Some say it's the body of Lance Naik Dorje Morup, while others say it's Head Constable Tsewang Paljor, who pushed for the summit on May 10, 1996, together with Subedar Tsewang Samanla.
The three men reportedly approached the summit but were compelled to retreat, stopping while still in the danger zone. The other three members of the team have reported seeing headlights going across the Second Step, which is located at 8,570 meters.200 bodies are thought to be frozen on Everest, the most of them are in the death zone. As the snow cover on the mountain thins due to climate change, more might appear.
