According to the Financial Times, Russia delivered a memo to Washington stating its hard stance on its demands regarding Ukraine, prompting the US to postpone a scheduled summit between Russian President Vladimir Putin and President Donald Trump in Budapest.
According to the article, the decision follows a "tense call" between the top diplomats of the two nations.
The Russia-Ukraine war will enter its fifth year in February, and Trump stated on Saturday that he will not meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin until he is certain that a tangible peace agreement is achievable.
In order to advance settlement talks, the two presidents were supposed to meet in Budapest, but the meeting never materialised.
"I must be certain that we will reach an agreement. While travelling to Asia in Air Force One, Trump assured reporters, "I'm not going to be wasting my time." He went on to say that while he and Putin have "always had a great relationship," Russia's most recent position has been "very disappointing."
The most recent meeting between Trump and Putin took place in Alaska on August 15 and was characterised by both parties as encouraging in their attempts to put a stop to Moscow's war in Ukraine.
However, there is little indication that the dispute will abate. At least four people were killed and twenty injured in overnight Russian missile and drone strikes on Ukraine, highlighting the terrible situation on the ground.
