At least ten men are said to have perished in the last year in Gadabaguda village, which is located in the Koraput district of Odisha and is within the Narayanpatna police limits. The area is engulfed in fear and superstition.
In retaliation, the villagers posted placards at the village entrance cautioning people not to come and banned strangers from entering for eight days beginning Sunday.
Reports state that the villagers attribute the string of male fatalities to the village deity's vengeance. They blamed divine wrath for the premature deaths, many of which followed unexpected falls or car crashes.
Following a local 'witch''s guidance, they started doing specific rituals and pujas to please the goddess in the hopes that the worship would alleviate their suffering and bring about peace.
Movement Restrictions
Outsiders have been strictly prohibited from entering during the ritual period. There are posters at the village entrance that make it very evident that outsiders are not allowed inside.
Villagers have also limited their own mobility; they are only allowed to move within the village limits and are not able to leave the region.
