The National Centre for Seismology (NCS) reports that an earthquake of a magnitude of 4.1 occurred near Ladakh on Thursday.
The earthquake was detected at 03:54:49 IST, with the epicentre located in Leh.
The NCS stated in a post on X, "EQ of M: 4.1, On: 30/04/2026 03:54:49 IST, Lat: 36.722 N, Long: 74.456 E, Depth: 150 Km, Location: Leh, Ladakh."
The epicentre of the earthquake was at latitude 36.722 N and longitude 74.456 E, and it happened at a shallow depth of 150 kilometres.
Anywhere between the surface of the Earth and around 700 km below it is susceptible to earthquakes. According to USGS data, this earthquake depth range of 0 to 700 km is separated into three zones for scientific purposes: shallow, moderate, and deep.
The depths of shallow earthquakes range from 0 to 70 km, intermediate earthquakes from 70 to 300 km, and deep earthquakes from 300 to 700 km. According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), "deep-focus earthquakes" are generally defined as those that occur deeper than 70 kilometres.
