Although no casualties were recorded, holidaymakers were alarmed when a fire broke out at a posh tent resort in Jaisalmer, Rajasthan, late on Thursday, according to authorities on Friday. Five opulent tents were totally destroyed, and tourists fled in fear as the fire spread quickly.
Since neither firemen nor civil defence teams arrived in time, resort employees and a few visitors attempted to put out the fire by throwing sand. According to witnesses, the fire was so hot that it could be seen about a km away.
According to Rajasthan Police Officer Bagdu Ram, the fire started at the Jain Resort at approximately 9 p.m. as a music and cultural event was taking place on the resort grounds. Suddenly, one of the tents caught fire.
Strong desert winds fuelled the fire, which swiftly expanded to other tents. Almost half an hour was needed to contain the fire.
He claimed that several tourists lost their personal items and that pricey electrical fixtures and furnishings were destroyed. After the fire was put out, the Maharashtra tourists who were staying at the resort were moved to other tents.
The absence of the fire department, despite the area's susceptibility to such events, prompted residents to accuse the district administration and municipal authorities of carelessness.
According to Ram, a firefighter is typically stationed close to the resort during the peak travel season, but it wasn't there when the event happened. The cause of the fire is being looked into, he added.
Evening cultural events in the area usually include Kalbelia dance and Rajasthani folk music at resorts. A terrible tragedy was averted when the fire started while the majority of vacationers were away from their tents.
Every year, a vast tent city is erected across a distance of around 10 km between Sam hamlet and Kanoi in Jaisalmer. Between 20 to 100 tents are used by resorts. The busiest travel season, which attracts both domestic and foreign tourists, starts around Diwali and lasts until January.
At least 28 persons were killed when a sleeper bus carrying 35 people caught fire on the Jaisalmer–Jodhpur highway on October 14.
