The organiser of the event surrounding Argentine football player Lionel Messi's visit to the Salt Lake stadium on Saturday, where fans turned violent because Messi was only there for a short while and was not visible to the majority of spectators, has been arrested by Kolkata police.
"When he wasn't playing, the supporters expressed some sort of worry or rage. Rajeev Kumar, the director general of police for West Bengal, told news agency PTI, "The plan was that he would come here, wave, meet certain people, and leave." "A committee that will investigate all aspects has already been established by the government."
At Salt Lake's Yubha Bharati Krirangan stadium, many people lost their temper and threw chairs and bottles after failing to get a good look at Messi.
The organisers are "giving in writing" that tickets would be reimbursed, according to the chief of state police. He declared, "The situation is under control now."
Fans reported that tickets were sold for as much as ₹4,000 or ₹25,000. The organiser was "detained," according to the DGP, and ADGP (law and order) Jawed Shamim subsequently verified the arrest. "The chief organiser has been arrested, and the FIR has been filed," Shamim told news agency ANI.
According to local media reports, the guy detained is Satadru Dutta; however, HT has not yet independently verified this information.
Mamata Banerjee, the chief minister, expressed shock that she was unable to attend the ceremony because it descended into turmoil in a matter of minutes.
Banerjee said on X, "I sincerely apologise to Lionel Messi, as well as to all sports lovers and his fans, for the unfortunate incident."
"The poor management at Salt Lake Stadium today has severely saddened and horrified me. Along with thousands of sports enthusiasts and supporters who had assembled to see their favourite football player, Lionel Messi, I was travelling to the stadium to attend the event," she wrote.
Fans expressed their dissatisfaction on social media and in the stadium, not at Messi but more at what they saw as an event that was taken over by "access," bad planning, and optics.
Angry viewers accused organisers of turning the event into a "VIP showcase" in video recordings released by news outlets.
"Only leaders and actors were surrounding Messi," a fan wrote in a post that quickly went viral on the internet, adding that even though they had paid ₹12,000, they "couldn't even see his face."
The crowd never understood the moment they were sold, according to a different supporter—"no kick, no penalty." The top police authorities have subsequently pledged to obtain reimbursements from the organisers in response to the swelling chorus of demands caught in the recordings.
Messi's three-day, four-city "GOAT India Tour 2025" began with this event.
