On Wednesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi called on world leaders to prioritize human values in the development of artificial intelligence (AI). He called for international collaboration to guarantee the safe, quick, and effective deployment of technology while safeguarding children, bolstering cybersecurity, and fostering inclusivity throughout the Global South.
Speaking at a panel on "Ensuring a Safe, Rapid and Efficient Rollout of AI" at the G7 Summit in Evian, Prime Minister Modi referred to AI as "one of the most transformative technologies ever created by humanity" and stated that its effects are now apparent in almost every facet of human existence.
PM Modi praised French President Emmanuel Macron for bringing the topic to the summit's agenda and emphasized AI's expanding importance in boosting scientific research, enhancing governance, and revolutionizing industries including manufacturing, healthcare, and education.

But he emphasized that technological competence alone should not be used to determine AI's genuine success.PM Modi emphasized India's dedication to creating "human-centric AI" by saying, "The real measure is how much it empowers ordinary people."
As the foundation for the nation's AI policy, the Prime Minister cited India's MANAV vision, which was presented at the AI Impact Summit earlier this year. "India's MANAV vision and His Holiness's message both express the same core belief: no matter how advanced technology becomes, human beings must remain at its center," PM Modi said, citing Pope Leo XIV's recent comments on the significance of human values, inclusivity, and meaningful human control in AI development.

His speech mostly addressed children's safety in a digital world that is becoming more and more AI-driven. PM Modi cautioned against dangers including false information, deepfakes, and online abuse while recognizing the technology's potential to offer instruction in native tongues, encourage creativity, and tailor learning experiences.The technology itself is not what distinguishes these two situations. It is found in the principles, design decisions, and governance structures that direct its application," he stated, adding that digital platforms ought to be used for learning and development rather for manipulation.
Regarding cybersecurity, PM Modi pointed out that cutting-edge AI models are generating previously unheard-of chances to fortify digital defenses. At the same time, he maintained that cooperation is the only way to achieve cybersecurity.

Third, in order to combat deepfakes, disinformation, and cyber fraud, PM Modi urged greater international cooperation, including broader use of digital watermarking and content authentication technology.
Lastly, he cautioned against the possibility of increasing global inequality and underlined the necessity of ensuring that AI's advantages reach developing countries and the Global South.He stated that rather than deepening already-existing divisions, AI should become a catalyst for inclusivity and shared advancement.
In closing, PM Modi reiterated India's commitment to working with international partners on responsible AI development and stated that AI policy must continue to be focused on enhancing human potential, enabling informed decision-making, and protecting human dignity.
