Cyclone Monthas devastation: Berhampur residences are flooded by sewage and drain water

The strong cyclonic storm Montha caused drainage water and sewage to overflow into residential areas after persistent rain late last night, flooding more than 20 homes in Shanti Nagar Sixth Lane under Ward No. 2 of Berhampur Municipal Corporation.
According to sources, the seepage caused dirty water to flood residences from ankle to knee depth, ruining possessions and preventing inhabitants from moving around, forcing them to spend the entire night in fear.
According to reports, more than 100 families reside in the impacted area. According to reports, there was significant waterlogging since the primary drainage routes were unable to release the accumulated rainwater. Residents claimed that the area's drainage system is still congested, making even light rainfall a nightmare for flooding, even after repeatedly complaining to local authorities.

Residents Demand Drainage Clearance Right Away
According to sources, the entire street was flooded at midnight, and rainfall combined with overflowing drains was getting into people's homes and gardens. Fearing a further rise in water levels, some family moved necessities to higher platforms and remained up till daylight.
The Berhampur municipality, according to the locals, has rarely taken action to clean the drains. They insisted that the drainage network's expansion and long-term desilting be given top priority.
According to recent reports, the city authorities in Berhampur were unable to provide any comments in this regard.
Significant Rainfall Caused by Cyclone Montha
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has ascribed the intense rainfall in southern Odisha to the aftermath of Cyclone Montha, which made landfall late Tuesday night close to the coast of Andhra Pradesh.

While Gajapati, Kandhamal, Balangir, and Nuapada are under orange warning, Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, Kalahandi, and Nabarangpur are still under red alert. It is anticipated that neighbouring districts, including Ganjam, where Berhampur is situated, will continue to see moderate rainfall.
